Primary Impact Area

Money for the People

Banks play a key role in financing local initiatives, such as loans to upgrade schools, build affordable housing, and improve infrastructure to withstand the impacts of the climate crisis. Money for the People supports a groundswell of grassroots movements advocating for public control over banking and finance, ensuring their communities have the resources they need to thrive, by creating toolkits and online materials, offering paid education and training, and fostering an ecosystem for democratic action.

The project has three key aims:

  • Increase people’s expectations and demands for public investments by training organizers and advocates capable of aligning their movements with public banking initiatives;
  • Build democratic power by growing and strengthening networks of organizers and advocates that are working to advance public banking; and
  • Shift the use of public dollars for the common good by supporting local grassroots movements to advance public banking initiatives

Anticipated outcomes include increased knowledge about public banking among organizers and advocates, growth in the size and number of public banking initiatives across the United States, and an increased presence of public banking narratives in news coverage and other materials, including legislative briefs and new policy proposals.
