A technology developed in a University of Michigan lab helps boost battery power in wearable devices from brands like Fitbit and Garmin.

Putting battery-powered edge AI everywhere. That’s the mission of Ambiq, co-founded in 2010 by U-M professors Dennis Sylvester and David Blaauw along with then-doctoral student Scott Hanson, who now serves as chief technology officer. In 2025, the tech company made its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange.

Ambiq — a portmanteau of “ambient intelligence” — is a powerful example of how federally funded research directly impacts everyday lives.
