U-M innovators break multiple research commercialization records in 2025

New programs. New patents. New partnerships.
Fiscal year 2025 was the strongest ever for research and innovation at the University of Michigan. In addition to a record-breaking number of inventions and licensing agreements, it was also the second time in U-M’s history that more than 30 startups were launched in a single year.
Each invention and each startup is a reminder that publicly funded research can be transformed into real-world impact.
Story highlights - in fiscal year 2025:
- 673 invention reports generated, topping the previous record of 615
- 326 license and option agreements signed, 50 more than the previous year
- 31 startup companies launched
- $633 million raised by U-M startups
- 135 new on-campus corporate sponsored research programs
